Supporters believe Proposition 12 will create more humane housing for pigs, hens, and calves. They claim the measure will reduce the risk of food poisoning and factory farm pollution. They claim that it will benefit farmers by forcing factory farms to stop cutting corners.
Opponents say that Proposition 12 actually legalizes the use of egg-factory cages that Proposition 2 outlawed in 2008. They claim that the measure actually will decrease space for hens, not increase it. They also say the measure will allow the legislature to make further housing changes without voter approval.
