Shawn Ree Canin is a first-generation immigrant and transfer student at the University of California, Berkeley, pursuing degrees in Legal Studies and Media Studies with a focus on Media Law and Policy. Raised by a single mother who worked as a public servant, Shawn's early experiences ignited his passion for public service and his dedication to community advocacy. With a keen interest in immigration and labor laws, he aspires to bridge gaps in legislation to better serve immigrant and marginalized populations, ensuring their needs are represented and addressed in both policy and public services.
Shawn's commitment to public service is evident through his diverse experiences. As an intern for Senator Scott Wiener's office, he has gained valuable insight into legislative processes, particularly the ways policies shape and respond to community needs. His roles as Chief of Staff and Legislative Director for ASUC Senators have further refined his leadership skills, allowing him to drive impactful initiatives. Additionally, he serves in Transfer Advocacy for the Pilipinx American Alliance and is an intern on the Executive Committee for Pilipinx Academic Student Services, supporting fellow students in navigating the first-generation and transfer experience while fostering a strong sense of community. Shawn has also volunteered as a translator and interpreter for the Immigration Institute of the Bay Area and the Filipino Community Center, ensuring equitable access to resources for immigrant communities.
Through the Schaeffer Fellowship, he aims to expand his skills in constituent services, legislative drafting and policy negotiation, ultimately preparing him for a career in government and public service. His goal is to advance policies that genuinely reflect and uplift all constituents, especially those who are often underrepresented.
