Marcus W. Albino is an Italian-American, first-generation student and international award-winning filmmaker majoring in Political Science with a minor in Public Policy. Growing up with housing insecurity in a low-income district, Marcus is committed to being of service to those communities who have long been disenfranchised and neglected. During his time at UC Berkeley, Marcus has volunteered for numerous organizations, including CALprig, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and has worked as a Research Apprentice on a variety of academic studies ranging from WTO analysis to forced labor and human trafficking. As a community college student, Marcus volunteered for the SHINE Leadership Program, working one-on-one with adult immigrants to prepare for their citizenship exam. Here, he witnessed the hostile conditions faced by countless Americans in their struggle to receive equitable treatment under the law, which inspired him to pursue a career in public policy. Currently, Marcus is developing a non-profit organization dedicated to providing women with free legal protection in eviction court, and next year he will be applying to graduate schools across the country to achieve his J.D./PhD. This stipend represents a unique opportunity for Marcus to engage in a rich academic experience regardless of socioeconomic status, a chance to fulfill the pledge of his forefathers who worked tirelessly to give their family a better life.
