Devyn Lopez is a third-year student at UC Berkeley pursuing a Social Welfare major and a Spanish minor. Devyn was raised in the Bay Area most of her life and discovered how crucial it is to give back to her community when she moved to East San Jose. Devyn is committed to assisting communities of color and under-served populations through direct legal, educational, or social services aimed to help individuals build a sense of agency. She is genuinely passionate about ending gender-based violence and one of her ultimate aspirations is to advocate on behalf of survivors of sexual and domestic abuse. Devyn’s past advocacy work has allowed her to educate people about domestic and sexual violence in a manner that promotes healthy relationships while also uplifting the difficult experiences of survivors.
She truly believes this challenging yet necessary work is needed in order to destigmatize sexual and domestic violence and give a voice to survivors who are weighed down by guilt and silence. It is important for Devyn that her professional path allows her to expand her reach to women of color who are disproportionately affected by sexual and domestic violence. She is seeking more opportunities to approach these issues through both micro-level and macro-level work such as public policy, research, and social work initiatives.
