Alma Castillo is a first-generation, low-income, second-year student at UC Berkeley from South Central Los Angeles. At Cal, she is a part of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Disabled Students Program (DSP), and Biology Scholars Program (BSP). She also participates in the College Corps Fellowship and is the Public Relations co-chair of UC Berkeley’s Comunidad for Health Equity (CHE). She is majoring in Public Health because she wants to help people from low-income communities live healthier lives by connecting them to health resources. She also wants to work on implementing early intervention and prevention strategies in neighborhoods to address major health issues throughout her career.
Like health equity, Alma is also passionate about educational equity. For two years, she has volunteered as a mentor for Educate2Elevate program, which assists students from her under-resourced high school and patients of a children’s hospital to prepare to apply for college. In the future, she will attend grad school to attain her Masters in Public Health and give back to organizations that supported her in attaining higher education.
