Christian Jared Aleman is a Bay Area native who grew up in San Francisco and the East Bay. With his various academic experiences, he is interested in the advancement of educational rights for historically marginalized students within California and beyond.
As a student, Christian has worked on projects within the Democracy Lab at the Latinx Research Center. His project focused on the democratic representation of Latin Americans in the United States. He recorded a period where undocumented families under Oakland Unified School District voiced their political opinions during the closure of schools serving critically underserved students in the flatlands of Oakland were announced. Additionally, he is a mentor for the Berkeley Hope Scholars program serving former foster youth as they transition into and thrive in college.
These experiences propelled him to become a UCDC Presidential Public Service Fellow for the Fall 2022 semester under the UC Washington Program. He spent his semester in the Capital interning at a non-profit dedicated to advancing rights for people with invisible disabilities. As an intern at the Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, his projects related to the unnecessary institutionalization of people with mental health disabilities.
Following his UCDC fellowship, he has accepted an offer to become a Bazelon Fellow and continues efforts towards complete societal integration of those with invisible disabilities. This is at an exciting time when the nation begins the difficult but necessary conversations regarding what supports and scaffolding are needed to address society’s mental health needs.
