Ngan Pham was born and raised in Vietnam and immigrated to the States in 2019. Growing up in a working-class family, Ngan deeply acknowledges the transformativeness of public education. It drives her to develop a strong commitment to bringing more educational access to marginalized students and increasing student retention and completion for higher education. Her post-graduation goals are to obtain a Master’s degree in counseling or a PhD in educational leadership.
While at UC Berkeley, Ngan is striving to get exposed and involved in different settings and areas focusing on education and public service. As a newly-arrived immigrant, Ngan is acutely aware of the psychological and economic difficulties of English learners which leads to her ongoing research about the English as a Second Language program during her Miller fellowship. Outside her academic studies, Ngan also works as a college and career advisor at Oakland International High School which mainly serves low-income and newly arrived immigrants and refugees to guide students on their post-secondary plans. Moreover, to explore her career in educational administration, she serves as an Undergraduate Representative for Berkeley School of Education in developing an Education major and addressing issues related to Education minor.
During the Democracy Camp fellowship, Ngan hopes to learn more about the impact of public service, especially public education, on marginalized communities at the federal level and aspires to bring those insights to her upcoming involvement in the education field.
