2022 Schaeffer Fellowship
Bio/CV:

Mairin Culwell is a rising senior pursuing a simultaneous degree in Political Science and Society and Environment. Growing up in the Bay Area, exposure to Northern California’s fragile ecosystems sparked her interest in the connection between conservation, education, and politics and continues to guide her career goals of advancing environmental protections through governance.

On campus, Mairin enjoys writing for the world section of Berkeley Political Review and being involved in BEACN, a student-led sustainable consulting club, where she has managed several projects on solutions to the plastic crisis in policy and reuse. These experiences provided confidence to her work as an intern for the California Ocean Protection Council; during the summer, she was a contributing author to the Statewide Microplastics Strategy and gained rich exposure to the research processes driving science-based conservation in California. As a Local Government Fellow, Mairin is excited to gain a better understanding of the obstacles that prevent environmental action at the local level and strategies for political success.
