Silas Nathaniel Kanady

Job title:
Class of 2025
Department:
2024 Cal-in-Sacramento
Bio/CV:

My name is Silas Kanady, and I am from the central coast city of Santa Maria, CA. Currently, I am a junior transfer student at UC Berkeley, pursuing a major in social welfare and a minor in public policy.

Before embarking on my academic journey, I dedicated my young adulthood to serving as a soldier in the Army. With combat deployments under my belt in both Iraq and Afghanistan, I had the privilege of honing my leadership skills while serving as a Sergeant in the legendary 101st Airborne Division. These experiences profoundly impacted me and forever altered my perspective on the world.

Service has always been an integral part of who I am—both as a soldier and now, as I press forward with my career in social welfare. At UC Berkeley, I actively engage with various communities on campus. As an Underground Scholar and NAVCAL Fellow, I strive to contribute meaningfully to these groups while also representing first-generation college students like myself.

In addition to being a dedicated student, I proudly embrace the role of being a parent. Balancing academics with parenthood is no small feat; however, it serves as powerful motivation for me to demonstrate through hard work and discipline what can be achieved despite life’s many challenges.

Looking ahead, I feel impelled toward graduate school to earn a master's degree in social welfare. This opportunity will further equip me with the knowledge and skills necessary for making lasting impacts within communities. Following this pursuit, obtaining an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) certification will enable me to provide comprehensive support and assistance where it is most needed.
